When in New Orleans in May this year we had the privilege of meeting up with Mark Samuels the President and owner of Basin Street Records for a chat. Basin Street Records represents some of the most popular and well-known local musicians including Kermit Ruffins, Irvin Mayfield, Jeremy Davenport, Dr Michael White, Jon Cleary, Henry Butler, Jason Marsalis, Davell Crawford and the Rebirth Brass Band. We hope you enjoy and are inspired by this interview as much as we were.

Last month we had the pleasure of chatting with our favourite Grammy Award winning trumpet player and cultural ambassador to the city of New Orleans Irvin Mayfield at the Esplanade Recording Studios, the largest recording studio in Louisiana in the heart of the historic Treme Neighbourhood.

Irvin was gracious with his time and the flickering lights and rumblings from the passing thunderstorm didn’t seem to dampen his enthusiasm to chat about his favourite topic, the music of New Orleans.

We’ve broken the interview into Parts starting with Irvin talking about how he got started in music and the influence of the music culture of New Orleans.

We hope you enjoy part 1 and we look forward to presenting you with the remainder of our chat.
